Ward 1 Challenger Claims Majority Support

A Democrat challenging Alder Sara Eidelson in a primary this year sought a ward committee vote — then signed up a majority of the committee’s members as supporters when he couldn’t get one.

The candidate, Fish Stark, is challenging Eidelson for the Ward 1 seat, which represents much of Yale.

Stark — a sophomore political science major and son of former U.S. Rep. Pete Stark — asked for a formal endorsement vote to be taken by the ward committee,. After he was turned down, he obtained the endorsements of 19 out of the ward committee’s 37 members. He released the list of names on Tuesday. (Click here to read the list and a campaign release.) Stark said the endorsements reflect the grassroots and institutional support we’ve built in this race” and the ward’s desire for change.”

Eidelson, a Yale graduate, works for Yale’s UNITE HERE unions. As an alder, she chairs the board’s Youth Committee, which has drawn up a citywide map of youth resources as well as a plan to support the opening of neighborhood youth centers.

Eidelson declined to comment on Stark’s release.
