A confrontation in a Wendy’s drive-through lane ended with a 57-year-old man unconscious and a 39-year-old man under arrest.
The confrontation took place outside the 2195 Dixwell Ave. Wendy’s Wednesday around 1:30 p.m.
Here’s what happened, according to Hamden police spokesperson Capt. Ronald Smith:
The two men involved were in separate vehicles.
The 57-year-old man, who lives in Hamden, drove alongside a vehicle in which the 39-year-old man, who lives in New Haven, was among the occupants.
The Hamden man later told cops that he “stated something” to the occupants of the other vehicle.
The New Haven man said the “something” was a racial slur.
The New Haven man “exited the vehicle and threw ‘a drink’” at the Hamden’s man’s vehicle. The Hamden man then exited his vehicle, at which point the New Haven man “‘punched’ him in the face, rendering [him] unconscious.’”
The New Haven man got back in the vehicle, and the driver left the scene. The Hamden man was left lying in the parking lot.
A call came to police, who arrived along with firefighters. The firefighters offered medical assistance; then the man was taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Officers Derick Manning and Ronald Glifort found the alleged puncher on Valley Street in New Haven, and arrested him on second-degree assault and breach of peace charges. He has an Oct. 5 court date.
