Nobody stole any vehicles in West Hills, West Rock, Westville, or Amity during the first week of 2024.
At least as far as the police know.
“This week we had zero auto thefts for the first time in recent memory!” top district cop Lt. Brian McDermott informed neighbors in his latest weekly emailed crime report.
“I believe a combination of extra security steps taken by vehicle owners, heightened awareness in our neighborhoods, and recent arrests have produced this desirable result. It is also worth keeping in mind that cold weather may be a factor. Many recent auto thefts have been perpetrated by juveniles stealing these vehicles for trivial reasons, and they may have been deterred by colder weather. Please continue to keep your eyes open on your streets and report all suspicious activity.”
A young man wearing a ski mask did make off with $1,200 Jan. 4 after pointing a gun at the cashier at Mobil gas station at 1474 Whalley, McDermott reported. The robber remains at large.
