A driver sped off after rear-ending a Mercedes on Fountain Street. But not before the Mercedes driver got the fleeing driver’s license plate.
That information helped Officer Matthew Vernick find and arrest the driver.
That was among the more notable incidents reported on the west side of town this past week. Top West Hills/ Westville/ West Rock/ Amity / BeverlyHills cop Lt. Rose Dell describes those incidents in her latest weekly district crime report, which follows:
FROM 6/23/19 to 6/29/19 POLICE RESPONDED TO 178 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN THE WESTVILLE/WEST HILLS SECTION OF NEW HAVEN. THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF NOTABLE INCIDENTS:
The police received three reports of car break-ins this week. On 6/23, sometime between noon and 6pm, a vehicle was broken into on Valley Street. The front passenger side window was smashed and a wallet and tablet were stolen from the center console. On the same date, a vehicle was ransacked on West Elm Street, and a pair of night vision glasses were stolen. The vehicle appeared to have been left unlocked. Thursday morning a resident of Oliver Street had her vehicle rummaged through and a Chrome lap top was stolen. The resident could not recall if she locked her car doors.
Monday evening police responded to South Genesee Street on the report of a burglary. The resident received a phone call from her neighbor who said there were 5 – 6 teenagers in front of their houses drinking alcoholic beverages. One of them was holding a television. When the resident returned home, she found two flat screen televisions, Nike sneakers, Vans sneakers, and a small safe were missing. The neighbor did not recognize the youths from the neighborhood.
On 6/26, police responded to a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Fountain Street and Pardee Place. A Mercedes was rear-ended at the traffic light. The offending vehicle took off and turned north onto Pardee Place. The driver of the Mercedes was able to get the plate of the fleeing vehicle. Officer Matthew Vernik located the offender and arrested her for leaving the scene of an accident.
Thursday police responded to two reports of garage break-ins. Sometime overnight the rear window to a garage on Alden Avenue was broken. A weedwacker and a powerwasher hose were stolen. Around the same time period a garage on Oliver Road was also burglarized. A Black Diamond all terrain bicycle, and a miter saw with a stand were stolen. The rear door to the garage appeared to have been left open.
