What Bench???

103_1960.jpgRebecca Turcio sent in these photos and the following write-up regarding Friends of East Rock Park:

When Friends of East had to decide what projects they would undertake with the URI Greenspace program this summer, their was dozens of things that needed to be done. But one stood out to those who use the wonderful hiking trails….to bring them back to the grand trails they once were. Many noticed the benches that once adorned the trails, were succumbed by mother natures invasive weeds. Addressing this would be part of their 2008 project.

103_1943.jpgWe will be working with the URI program to beautify the trail. Last night a group of community members from both East Rock and Cedar Hill came together by pulling poison ivy and other weeds from the bench area. They defined the area with mulch and sand stone, as well as planting local shrubs. The bench slots will be replaced with in a few weeks to complete the projects.
It was a joy for all to see all the runners and dog walkers that came by. This is one of the most used trails of the East Rock Park” said Betty Thompson. We are hoping that this project will bring even more people out on the trails.

On July 19th East Rock will be the location of New Haven’s first Cycling Celebration (which hopes to become a larger annual event). We hope with the help of caring New Havener’s and the East Rock community to have completed a few of these areas for the event. Friends of East Rock will be running a Kite flying area in the North Meadows so make sure to stop by. (Link.)
