New New Haven voices are behind the microphone at New Haven’s community radio station, ranging from a leading immigration-rights advocate to a New Haven humanist to a DJ with a mission.
Five shows in all have been added to the roster of regular shows on WNHH, the New Haven Independent’s and La Voz Hispana’s radio station, which you can listen to live at 103.5 FM or on the web here — or after the fact in our Soundcloud archive after each show has aired.

Afternoon Free Ride
Elvert Eden a.k.a. “DJ R‑EL” joins WNHH at 2 p.m. each Tuesday to spin some very cool tracks, pulling from both old and new music. When he isn’t behind a console, Eden works as the Youth Development & Aquatics director for L.E.A.P. For listeners who don’t catch the 2 p.m. program, “Afternoon Free Ride” replays every evening at 10 p.m.
Artbeat
Creative Arts Workshop Executive Director Daniel Fitzmaurice interviews visual artists and creatives from around the city. Thus far guests have included Lianne Audette, Sam Shevelkin, Laura Marsh, Rena Tobey, J.R. Logan and Ann Lehman. Kica’s Corner
At 2 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month, immigration activist Kica Matos takes to the airwaves to talk about cultural rights and racial justice with guests from around the city. On her first episode, she interviews Sebi Medina-Tayac, a Native American student activist, about identity, Yale’s student uprising, and liberation versus liberal arts education. Matos is the director of Immigrant Rights and Racial Justice at the Center for Community Change (“CCC”), an organization whose mission is to empower the people most affected by injustice to lead movements to improve the policies that affect their lives. Grounded
At 10 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month, hosts Chris Stedman and Onyeka Obiocha come together for “Grounded,” a show about that explores the idea of groundedness through three segments: what’s grinding their gears that month, what’s soundtracking their grind, what grounds a monthly guest. Obiocha is the president of A Happy Life and co-owner of New Haven’s Happiness Lab coffee shop; Stedman is the executive director of the Yale Humanist Community (YHC). Restless Radio
Who knew radio was so restless? WSHU Producer Katie Toth joins the station for this program every Friday at 9 a.m., exploring “the things that keep us up at night.” One episode in, guests have included Gayle Alberda, political scientist at Drake University, and Lesley Hazleton, self-described “accidental theologist.” Find episodes here.
