A 25-year-old woman was in the hospital Thursday with “life-threatening injuries” after the driver of a commercial beverage delivery truck ran into her.
So reported police spokesman Capt. Anthony Duff.
Duff said the collision occurred on Long Wharf Drive Monday at 2:33 p.m.
The woman was crossing on foot near the Long Wharf visitors center when the truck hit her.
“The pedestrian suffered broken bones in most limbs and internal injuries,” Duff wrote in a release. She remained in critical condition Thursday.
Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (203) 946‑6316. The department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit has begun an investigation.
Theoretically, the driver could be charged under the state’s “vulnerable users law” if found to be at fault. The city police have never charged anyone under the law (including even in cases like this, this and this) because of concerns over wording that New Haven State. Rep. Roland Lemar is trying to address during this legislative session.
Laundromat Spat Turns Violent
Meanwhile, the Hamden police have arrested an 18-year-old man for alleged assault of a police officer and risk of injury to a minor (among other charges) following an incident that occurred at Campus Laundry at 16 Fairview Ave. Monday around 6 p.m.
Here’s what happened, according to Hamden police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith:
The man began swearing in front the small children of a 36-year-old woman who was doing her laundry. Then he allegedly “pushed” a cart containing her 10-month-old daughter, who fell and “hit her head.”
Firefighters showed up to treat the daughter. Cops showed up, too. They tried arrest the man, who “became aggressive and began fighting.” The encounter injured three officers, one of whom separated his shoulder.
Officer Brian Jackson (a New Haven cop who moved over to the Hamden department last month) is handling the investigation of the incident.
