Police responded to a report of a sexual assault at the corner of Whalley and Winthrop avenues around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:
A woman was walking on Whalley, turning onto Winthrop, when she passed a man with a thin build who stood perhaps five feet, six inches tall. The hood of his pullover or sweatshirt was up.
He grabbed her. He dragged her into an alley. He put what she believes was a knife to her throat. She tried to escape; she couldn’t.
The man “raped her and then took a pack of Newport 100 cigarettes, money and her phone from her pocket,” Hartman reported. “She said he removed the battery from her phone and threw it to the ground.”
The man, who was a stranger, fled. Police are looking for him.
The woman was taken to the hospital. Detectives interviewed her and hospital staff experienced in traumatic cases counseled her there.
