Most of the blossoms were gone, but that didn’t stop thousands of people from flocking to Wooster Square Sunday for the neighborhood’s annual festival.

The 39th annual Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival drew a few thousand” people to Wooster Square park Sunday afternoon, according to festival Co-Chair Charlie Murphy.

This year’s event featured opera singers and visiting owls and hawks.

Wooster Square neighbor Chris Randall sent in the following photos.

St. Luke’s Steel Drum Band (pictured above) brought some members of the crowd to their feet.

Soprano Christina Holms sang before families in folding chairs and picnic benches.

Cassie the Great Dane got some love.

Face-painting proved popular. We need more face-painters next year,” Murphy concluded.

After a mild winter, the famous blossoms burst two weeks early this year, prompting fears of global warming.

A few blossoms remained for the festival, but basically they were gone,” Murphy said.

Their disappearance didn’t detract from the program at all,” he said.

Murphy said he doesn’t have an official count for attendees, but a lot of people said it was the biggest crowd ever.”
