Word On College Street: Future Doc Makes A Pit Stop

Rose Bender started the week with a flat tire. She rolled with it, her hand on the wheel and her eventual destination in sight.

At 9:30 a.m. she had planned to be at Yale Medical School for a lecture on diabetes.

I tried to go class,” Bender said during a conversation on WNHH FM’s LoveBabz LoveTalk” program, and I had a flat tire.”

So she walked her Liv Alight bike from her Wooster Square apartment to College Street Cycles to have the flat repaired.

They were super friendly. They told me to come back in 30 or 40 minutes.” The shop often turns around flats even faster; Monday morning is crunch time. Three other people came in with deflated tires just while Bender passed through.

As a first-year med student, Bender spends most of her time in classes. She’s interested in gastroenterology.

Want to hear a fun fact that I learned? Did you know that 30 percent of the acid in your stomach is produced just by you smelling or seeing or thinking about food?”

She’s thinking of going into internal medicine because she likes meeting and talking to people.

She’s not worried about AI wiping out that part of the job, she said.

You don’t want to hear you have cancer from AI. You want to hear that from a real person,” she reasoned.

The human touch is important in the medical field. My optimistic view is that AI will be able to help doctors with large amounts of data coming in — lab data, genomic data, parsing it. I don’t think we’ll be replaced. We’ll be helped.”

Bender’s deflated tire failed to deflate her spirit for the day. She headed to Claire’s for a decaf latte. (With soy: I’m thinking about the digestive system.”) And she wouldn’t miss the diabetes lecture after all; it was being recorded, so she could listen later.
