The word on Ferry Street on Wednesday morning was “delinquency.”
Gladys Tavarez had that subject on her mind as she prepared for another day working at the CTown supermarket at Fair Haven’s Ferry-Grand commercial crossroads. She shared that perspective during a chat on the daily “Word on the Street” segment of WNHH FM’s “LoveBabz LoveTalk” program.
Tavarez lamented in Spanish that people are always smoking outside Fair Haven School near CTown, and that crime has been up in the area\. She said she hopes law enforcement will be more responsive to concerns in the neighborhood. “A ver si hacen algo y cambian la situación,” she said: See if they do something and change the situation.
Still, Tavarez said she loves coming to work CTown, which she has done for 21 years. Her coworkers and customers are fun to be around, she said. They feel like family. And she loves that the supermarket carries a wide variety of international Latin American products.
After her shift ends at 3 p.m., Tavarez was looking forward to picking her daughter up from daycare and cooking “arroz, habichuela, carne y ensalada” — rice, beans, meat and salad — to relax after a long day of work.
