Yale Snags $5.9M In Stimulus”

The flood of federal economic stimulus” dollars flowing into New Haven has washed up at Yale University’s gates and New Haven’s housing authority in a big way.

The university has already received $5.9 million from a total of 21 grants issued under the plan passed earlier this year to pump money into the recession-battered economy.

The Housing Authority of New Haven (HANH) picked up a $6 million capital improvements grant. (Read about that here.)

The local stimulus tally, as of of July 20, comes from a report by the not-for-profit investigative journalism outfit ProPublica. It shows New Haven County receiving $144,677,712 so far. Click here to see the local breakdown (and double-check our math on Yale’s total receipts).

Yale’s grants include $680,000 to study about lifestyle modification to reduce weight and related morbidity in mental illness,” $405,000 to research microstructural engineering of shape memory thin films and nanowires,“and $647,000 in Pell grants for low-income undergrads’ tuitions. Albertus Magnus and University of New Haven also received Pell grants.

When Yale President Rick Levin announced budget cuts last December, he said in an interview that he hoped that the stimulus package will help fill the gap and preserve jobs.

The stimulus program has just begun sending money to states. ProPublica plans to stay on top of the money trail.
