Lt. — and soon-to-be Capt.? — Zannelli.

Lt. David Zannelli is first in line to become one of New Haven’s next police captains.

Zannelli — the police department’s current head of internal affairs and a former Fair Haven district manager whose success in building community trust helped boost a recent investigation into an officer’s abuse of sex workers — emerged with the top score in a civil service test for the captain position.

The Civil Service Board certified the results of that test Wednesday. Nine lieutenants took the test. Nine passed.

There are currently three captain slots open on the force. Acting Chief Renee Dominguez said Wednesday she plans to go down the list of test results in order when she makes her choices to fill those slots.

We are very excited to promote into the captain position,” Dominguez stated.

The department has been wrestling with shortages both on the street and in the upper ranks.

Zannelli scored 88.36 on the test. Here are the other results:

• John Healy 85.23
• Rose Dell 83.38
• Nicholas Marcucio 81.23
• Manmeet Colon 81.18
• Jason Rentkowicz 80.72
• Mark O’Neill 78.97
• Stephan Torquati 78.21
• Elliot Rosa 75.23
