This is the fourth in our series of interviews with the candidates running for state representative and state senate.
Republican Adam Greenberg of Branford and Democrat Christine Cohen, a resident of Guilford, are running for the 12th District Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy Jr. since 2015. The 12th District represents Branford, Guilford, Madison, North Branford, Durham, and Killingworth.
Raised in Guilford and now a resident of Branford, Greenberg was a star baseball player at Guilford High School and went on to play at the University of North Carolina, then the Chicago Cubs, where he was hit by a fastball and suffered a fractured skull during the first pitch. He then played for various minor leagues and struck out in three pitches in a one-day game for the Marlins. He is now CEO of Lurong Living, a company he founded that offers healthy living lifestyle tips and sells nutritional products.

Friends, families, and colleagues filled Levinson Auditorium at Yale Law School Saturday to celebrate the life of Eagle editor Marcia Chambers.
While Branford residents know her as a presence in town as the editor of the Eagle, few realize her career in investigative journalism and teaching spanned decades as she crisscrossed the country plying her craft.

Editor’s note: This is the second of a series of interviews with candidates for state representative and state senate. The interview with Republican state representative candidate Robert Imperato ran yesterday.
Democratic candidate Robin Comey and Republican Robert Imperato are vying for the seat being vacated by Democratic State Rep. Lonnie Reed, who decided to retire after 10 years of service. The 102nd District includes six of the seven voting districts in Branford. State Rep. Sean Scanlon (D) is running unopposed to represent the 98th District, which covers a section of Branford, and most of Guilford.

Music! Music! Music! There are various opportunities coming up, depending on your taste – folk/bluegrass, jazz, Broadway, classical, and even the Whiffenpoofs. There are outdoor events as well – bird lovers will remember Dr. Noble Proctor – an artists’ reception, and events that celebrate the spirit of the season. If you have kids, don’t forget the OPEN event at Branford High School with BMX pro Tony Hoffman. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net.

Animal Awareness Day on the Branford Green Sunday with its Blessing of the Animals is a favorite among all pet lovers. Somehow, it seems that the pets are aware of the how special the occasion is and are always well behaved. The day features lots of other educational activities and vendors with all sorts of information. Fall activities abound with plenty of opportunities to get into the spirit of the season.

Some coaches believe in order to get better in their sport they should “Play Up,” which basically means competing against better teams or teams that historically have success. Such was the case last week when Coach Kevin Connell and his Hornet cross country team ran the 3.1 mile course at the Supply Pond against perennial power Fairfield Prep in their dual meet.

This is the weekend bibliophiles have been waiting for. The Friends of Blackstone Library’s book tents will anchor the green through Sunday. The Friends collect books all year long just for this event. Come for the book sale, and stay for a whole host of other family-friendly activities – pumpkin decorating, food, the Trinity Church Fair, and did we mention the food? And the books?

Renovations at the Blackstone Memorial Library will be delayed while re-bidding takes place in three areas of the project that came in about $500,000 over budget. The other 14 construction bid packages came in at or under budget, and will not be re-bid.
The renovation and expansion project was slated to begin in September. The total cost is $5.2 million, but the actual cost to the town is about $3.4 million because of the $1 million State Library grant and another $800,000 in capital campaign donations.
