A memorial service to celebrate the life of Branford Eagle editor Marcia Chambers will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Yale Law School Levinson Auditorium, 127 Wall St., New Haven. Marcia died July 13.
The auditorium is the site of the jazz concerts that Marcia planned each year to honor her late husband, Stan Wheeler, a Yale law professor who played trumpet with the Yale Jazz Ensemble, and the Reunion Jazz Ensemble.
The Branford boys’ soccer team is off to another good start, winning their first three games of the season. Last year they rattled off five straight wins on their way to a 13 – 7‑1 record and an appearance in both the SCC tournament and the Class L State Tournament before falling to no. 3 ranked Guilford 3 – 0 in the quarter finals. Above, co-captains Marzio Mastroianni and Ben DeMaio hustle to catch up with the ball.
“It’s going to be amazing,” said Keely Baisden Knudsen, artistic director of the soon-to-be restored Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek.
Knudsen met with the Eagle to announce a $1.2 million donation that will kickstart their capital campaign. Plans call for restoring the theater to its 1930s look when Orson Wells and Sinclair Lewis made history there.

Paddle your own canoe (or kayak), ride the Super Hero trolley, pedal your bike, or party at the pond. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

The draft of the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) has been finalized and is being sent to the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission for a public hearing and adoption.
The 10th year of the recently concluded 2018 Branford Jazz summer series ended on a high note with the performance of saxophonist Elan Trotman & Tropicality, before an estimated audience of 700 on the Branford Green.

The Branford Fire Department will increase staffing with eight new firefighters; the town is purchasing a 14-acre property on Tabor Drive; and the second contract has been approved for town supervisors and department heads.
With bipartisan action, the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) approved all three proposals by a unanimous vote of the 25 members present Wednesday night. The RTM’s Ways and Means Committee and the Public Services Committee previously voted unanimously in favor of the proposals.

The results of the Smarter Balance Assessments for 2017 – 2018 for the Branford School District show flatline or slightly lower results than previous years.
The tests are designed to measure students’ progress based on Common Core State Standards designed to improve teaching and learning. Tests are given to elementary and middle school students in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

The jazz series was very busy this past week with three concerts in seven days. First was the regularly scheduled Andy Snitzer group on Aug. 23, then came the postponed Run N’ Fly concert, originally scheduled to open this seasons series back on June 28, that was rained out. They made up their concert on Sunday Aug. 26, and that was followed by the exciting Elan Trotman and Tropicality concert to close out this year’s outstanding series this past Thursday. The audience showed early approval for music.
