Two Branford legislators were honored Wednesday by Catherine Smith, commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), for their accomplishments in economic development.
State Rep. Lonnie Reed (D‑Branford) and former State Rep. Pat Witlitz (D‑Branford and Guilford) were honored during a Women’s Day luncheon at the Connecticut Open tennis tournament in New Haven.

A bonus jazz concert this weekend: Run N’Fly, who was scheduled to appear at the very first concert of the series, will make up their performance on Sunday. Thursday’s concert with Elan Trotman & Tropicality will be the last of the series, which has drawn hundreds to the green each week. Shutterbugs are invited to the Shoreline Trolley Museum to photograph the vintage trolleys spit and polished for the occasion. Hard to imagine that we’re looking at the end of the summer – but it will go out with a bang – just ask Short Beachers as they get ready for their annual three-day celebration.

After a two-plus hour executive session, the Board of Education resumed its regular session Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Branford High School, and voted unanimously to extend the contract of Schools superintendent Hamlet Hernandez until 2021 and approve a 2.5 percent salary increase. The board also heard a report on school security from consultant Joe Erardi in executive session.
The board typically does not report on details of its executive sessions. School security, however, has been discussed at length in recent months.

It’s not just a question of who will succeed Democrat Lonnie Reed as state rep in the 102nd District; or who will succeed Democrat Ted Kennedy Jr. as state senator in the 12th District.

Despite the terrible weather, a cadre of volunteers and supporters came to the Branford Green to lend a hand to Woofstock, the Dan Cosgrove Branford Animal Shelter’s largest annual fundraiser.
“The weather is something we can’t control,” said Shelter director Laura Burban, who got a little wet during the early rain. “We plan for a long time to make this a successful fundraiser and then it rains.”

What was written about the Caswell Sisters before they performed on the Branford Green gave every indication the audience would be in for a special treat, and that turned out to be true. They opened up the show with “Song of Life.”
From the BranfordJazz.com website, “The riveting performances of the Caswell Sisters, vocalist Rachel and violinist Sara are the culmination of working together. Their seamless sound combined with their unique interpretation of repertoire ranging from ‘The Great American Songbook’ to contemporary jazz, including their own compositions, is propelled by arresting improvisation.”

Branford residents cast some 3,584 votes in Tuesday’s state primary election, making for an overall turnout of just 17.5 percent. All numbers reported are approximate and subject to final verification.
Democrat gubernatorial candidate Ned Lamont and the Democrats led the turnout in all seven districts. Lamont was the overwhelming winner with 1,872 votes over Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim’s 310.

The large audience on the Branford Green was treated on Aug. 2 to another enjoyable evening of jazz. This time it was a dynamic soulful, performance by accomplished flutist Althea Rene. Here she pauses for a moment before coming on stage.
“She and her group were dynamic tonight,” said jazz committee member Terry Elton, who also serves as the town’s special projects manager. “She puts her heart and soul into every song and it was great when she left the stage to go out into the audience and get them involved.”

Jane Bouley returns to the library to sign copies of her new book – it’s a fascinating read. Take advantage of local produce at its best at the Dudley market and savor some fruit of the vine at the Shoreline Wine Festival at Bishop’s in Guilford. And, don’t forget to vote in the Primary on Tuesday!

Parkside Village 1
Efforts to rebuild the deteriorating Parkside Village 1 affordable housing complex in Branford are at a crossroads.
One of the issues is whether a 1925 statute about neighborhood protest petitions is relevant to projects filed under the 1990 Affordable Housing Statute.
