Curiosity got the best of this reporter a week ago when I heard, “Anouman,” the group that was performing on the Green, was going to play Gypsy Jazz. Well known jazz genres that come to mind include Cool Jazz, Soul Jazz, Latin Jazz, or even Bebop, Dixieland, Boogie or Ragtime. However, it turns out Gypsy Jazz, which goes back to the 1930s and 1940s, is pretty popular, and after the group’s concert it was easy to see why. They drew about 600 people to the green on the warm summer night.

A lot of effort has gone into the production of “Hamlet” by the Shoreline Arts Alliance. If you can’t get to Guilford, be sure to take the kids to the Branford green this morning at 10 a.m. for Hamlet Abridged!
A note to our readers: If you have not been receiving regular emails with our stories and wish to do so, we have an alternate list available. Just email sebahner@snet.net and you will be included in future mailings.

The Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission unanimously approved changes to the proposed Sterling Ridge housing plan Thursday, but only after the developers reached agreements with neighbors including the Branford Historical Society.
“They’ve done well, working with the neighbors,” said P&Z chair Chuck Andres (center).

The committee that organizes the yearly Branford Jazz on the Green on Thursday evenings has made every effort to offer different groups a chance to perform over the series’ 10 years. Paula Atherton, the multi-talented jazz artist, was invited to return July 19, having last appeared in 2010.

Wednesday’s meeting of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) was a lesson in irony.
The RTM denied a request from Branford’s Housing Authority to grant an easement on Melrose Avenue for two years during construction of the proposed Parkside Village affordable housing project. Some RTM members said the easement would actually be in perpetuity, which they opposed; and they also objected to the $200,000 donation to help build the road, offered by the Housing Authority and its developer, Beacon Communities LLC of Boston.

When it comes to cool events this summer, we’re on a roll. If you missed some earlier – Dudley Farm Farmers’ Market, Jane Bouley’s booksigning, and the popular jazz concerts on the green – there are opportunities for a redo. Be sure to catch the Shoreline Trolley Museum’s trolley parade and pencil in Woofstock, always a favorite, and the Rotary Club’s classic car show. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

The flagpole memorial on the Green has a new look, and it’s not the first time.
Thanks to the initiative of the members of the Branford Garden Club Evening Committee, who secured the support of town officials and several town departments as well as Van Wilgen’s Garden Center, the Veterans Memorial Garden project got started in May and concluded this past week with a brief ceremony showcasing the new look garden.

Storm’s a comin’. This will be a good weekend for inside activities. Take the kids to the library this afternoon – they can learn all about sound, courtesy of the Connecticut Science Center. We’ve been looking forward to town historian Jane Bouley’s new book about Branford’s street names. If you look at old maps of Branford you’ll see many of today’s street names. Bouley will be at the library on Saturday to sign copies of her book. Cuddling kitties is a great indoor activity – Branford Compassion Club is having a food and supply drive. Stop by – you may also find the love of your life. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net.
