6 Shot, 2 Killed Overnight In New Haven & Hamden

A night of gunfire across New Haven and Hamden left six people shot, two of them fatally.

A 37-year-old man was shot to death on Springside Avenue around 4:15 a.m. Sunday, according to police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway.

Three hours earlier, around 1:08 a.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was taken to Yale New haven Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds after he was shot on South Genessee Street near Harper Avenue.

And at 10:44 p.m. Sunday, two 28-year-old men were shot on Button Street between Lamberton and Rosette. They were hospitalized for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds, according to Shumway.

Update: Police Tuesday identified the homicide victim as Miguel Ramos of New Haven.

In Hamden, at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, police were investigating one shooting from earlier in the evening when they hearing multiple gunshots” coming from Hamden Park Drive. They went over there to find a man lying in the road” with numerous gunshot wounds,” according to police spokesperson Capt. Ron Smith. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith did not report the man’s name or age.

The earlier shooting took place in the parking lot of 940 Dixwell Ave. at 1:49 a.m., according to Smith. A 29-year-old man was taken to the hospital to undergo surgery after being shot. At least one motor vehicle was struck by bullets,” Smith reported. Several gunshots were fired at the scene.”

Also early Sunday, Hamden cops arrested a 37-year-old Meriden man on multiple weapons charges after an encounter and chase, according to Smith.

The officers went at the area of Dixwell and Putnam avenues at 4:30 a.m. to respond to a report of passed-out” motorist, according to Smith.

Officer Vin Palma arrived and attempted to place the running vehicle’ into park,” Smith wrote in a release. The operator of the vehicle shoved Officer Palma and then nearly struck him with his vehicle.” The driver’s car did strike a police vehicle, as the driver fled northbound” on Dixwell.

The fleeing driver entered a northbound entrance to the Wilbur Cross Parkway, and struck a curb, which flattened his left front tire,” Smith wrote. A chase continued: Officers followed the man to his Meriden residence, where he resisted arrest” but was taken into custody, according to Smith. Charges include criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, first-degree reckless endangerment, weapons in a motor vehicle, illegal purchase of a large-capacity magazine, sale of narcotics, interfering with a police officer, engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving, and evading responsibility.

Sunday’s homicide was the 14th so so far this year in New Haven.

In January, Alfreda Youmans, 50, and Jeffrey Dotson, 42, were found dead by the police inside a Winthrop Avenue apartment, Jorge Osorio-Caballero, 32, was shot and killed in Fair Haven, Marquis Winfrey, 31, was shot and killed in Newhallville, and Joseph Vincent Mattei, 28, was shot and killed in the Hill. Someone shot Kevin Jiang, 26, to death in Goatville on Feb. 6. Angel Rodriguez, 21, was shot to death in Fair Haven in mid-February, his body dumped by the Mill River in East Rock. Dwaneia Alexandria Turner, 28, was shot to death in the Hill on March 16 during an argument with two other women.

On March 26, Alessia Mesquita was shot dead in Fair Haven. Then 20-year-old Mariyah Inthirath was killed Saturday, May 15, on Sheffield Avenue and Hopeton Jack was killed near Orchard and George on Tuesday, May 18. On May 19, Tashawn Brown was shot dead across from Edgewood Park. On May 26, 34-year-old Adrian Barwise was shot inside a Sherman Parkway house during an apparent argument over a game, according to police.
