Police found a dead man’s frozen body in the ice-covered duck pond in Edgewood Park Saturday morning after a dog discovered it.
Two men were walking their dog by the pond around 8:45 a.m. when the dog walked out on the ice into the middle of the pond.
The dog started barking. It was too precarious for the men to walk out, but they called 911 and reported they believed a body may be in the water, according to police.
Firefighters and police responded to the water rescue in the area off of Chapel Street between Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and Yale Avenue.
A NHFD water rescue team located and removed an adult male from the pond, police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff wrote by email. An ambulance transported the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Police are exploring whether the person was a missing young man for whom the community has been searching. But authorities were unable to make a definitive identification. They’re waiting on the results of an autopsy.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203 – 946-6304.
