A one-alarm firm engulfed a two-story apartment Tuesday morning at the St. Martin Townhouses at 200 Goffe St.
The call came in to the fire department at 6:26 a.m., according to Fire Chief John Alston Jr.
Firefighters from Engine 6, a block away at the Goffe Street station, rushed over. They could see the flames from the firehouse.
“It was fully involved first and second floor,” Alston said of the fire. “They got in and knocked it down pretty quick.”
One firefighter went to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening burns to his left arm.
A five-member household escaped the apartment without injury, according to Alston. (A woman who was examined and assessed at the scene declined medical attention.) The Red Cross has been called to temporarily relocate the woman.
“It appears to be accidental,” though the cause remains under investigation, Alston said.
The 63-unit complex across from Dr. Reginald Mayo Early Learning School, which has been slated for multimillion-dollar repairs under a new owner, suffered serious flooding last April during a torrential downpour.
