On his last day in uniform as a New Haven firefighter, Chief Michael Grant found himself surrounded by faces from his past, well-wishers from four decades of service to the city.
Those well-wishers crowded into a third-floor conference room at fire department headquarters on Grand Ave. Friday for a retirement gathering for Chief Grant.
Mayor Toni Harp has chosen to replace Grant, who’s been a firefighter since 1972, with former Assistant Chief Allyn Wright, who starts on Monday.
“I’m good. I’m very proud,” said Chief Grant, in between hugs and handshakes with past and present firefighters and city officials. “I’ve had an outstanding career. I’ve worked with some of the best people in the profession.”
Grant said he has no plans for his next move, yet.
Friday’s event featured a cake with photos from Grant’s years on the job.
The event was a who’s‑who of former and current city and fire department staff, including former public works chief John Prokop, pictured greeting Grant.
Former Mayor John DeStefano showed up to pay his respects.
He spoke about how much Grant loves the department, and how capable he was a its leader.
The city engineering department offered a gift basket with a hard hat, toy fire truck, and a box of matches.
Grant thanked his longtime administrative assistant, Denise D’Amato.
“Nothing is more gratifying than to be able help somebody,” Grant during a short speech. “I’m going to miss that fulfillment.”
Grant hugged his successor, Wright.
