Thirty-seven New Haven public schools and three Hamden public schools will be providing free breakfast and lunch pick-ups starting Monday in an effort to make sure kids don’t go hungry while both systems are closed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.
On Saturday afternoon, city spokesperson Gage Frank sent out a press release identifying the 37 New Haven schools that will be food pick-up sites Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
All city public schools closed indefinitely starting Friday as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“Families of students will be instructed to go to the site nearest to their residence,” the press release reads. “Food distribution sites will be open for both breakfast and lunch pick up Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. NHPS officials will work to maintain appropriate social distancing per Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines in an effort to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19.”
The announcement came on the same day that Mayor Justin Elicker and city Health Director Maritza Bond confirmed that a city resident has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, as have three non-residents who were recently tested by Yale New Haven Health, including the hospital’s systems chief nursing executive.
See above for a map of all 37 locations where free breakfast and lunch can be picked up. See below for that same list of school names and addresses.

Hamden has also identified three schools, Hamden High School, Hamden Middle School, and the Church Street School, where anyone between the ages of 5 and 18 can pick up a meal between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. starting Monday.
Quinnipiac University Professor Amy Walker and her students mapped those locations (see above).
Many of Hamden’s students rely on free or reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches. Though schools are now closed indefinitely, the district is still providing meals to those who need them with a system similar to the district’s summer meals program.
Hamden High School is on the CTtransit 238 bus line. Hamden Middle School is on the 238C line, and is also a 15-minute walk from Centerville, which is accessible on the 228 and 229 lines. The Church Street School is about a five-minute walk from Dixwell Avenue and the 238 line.
