Grab your suit and sun block — New Haven’s Lighthouse Point Park beach is reopening Thursday afternoon now that the water has been deemed safe for swimming.
New Haven’s health director, Maritza Bond, had previously ordered the Lighthouse Point Park beach to remain closed based on the results of tests on three water samples from a state lab showing high bacteria levels. Bond ordered the beach closed Saturday after Tropical Storm Elsa passed through town, with stormwater and sewage surges that posed threats of elevated bacteria levels.
The city received new lab results Thursday showing the water is now safe, according to mayoral spokesperson Kyle Buda.
“I’m happy for the quick turnaround by the state testing lab,” a city release issued Thursday quoted Bond as saying. “Residents should now enjoy Lighthouse Point Beach as you normally would with confidence that the water is safe. Routine water testing will now resume.”
