(Updated Wednesday 11:06 a.m.) A man is in critical condition after someone shot him near the corner of Norton Street and Whalley Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting occurred on Norton near the northeast corner of Norton and Whalley around 12:20 p.m.
People in the area heard several gunshots, then saw a man crumble to the ground on the sidewalk outside the corner convenience store and next-door laundromat.
Then the shooter allegedly sped away in a vehicle whose driver had turned onto Norton from Whalley moments before, according to one eyewitness.
Police arrived and sealed off the area. The victim’s injuries were described as life-threatening. (Update: Police said Wednesday morning that the victim is 24 years old; his condition remained critical.)
Eighteen evidence markers were visible on the sidewalk.
Police did not have more immediately to report as an investigation was just beginning. The victim was the fifth person reported shot in New Haven in five days.
