Guv Changes Mind On Opening Salons, Barber Shops

It might be time to order that Flowbee after all, now that Gov. Ned Lamont has changed his mind about allowing barber shops and salons to open this week.

The governor originally included the haircutters in his phase one” of businesses allowed to reopen Wednesday amid the spread of the coronavirus. He even permitted them to use hair blowers, which experts say greatly magnify the potential of people catching Covid-19, especially in confined spaces.

On Monday, after hearing from a statewide group of salon owners who consider reopening unsafe, Lamont announced he is delaying the reopening of haircutting establishments until early June” in coordination with Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo.

We’ve been hearing a lot of feedback from many owners and employees, and at this time I think the best approach is that we hit pause on the reopening of hair salons and barbershops, take a step back, and allow some more time as preparations continue to be made,” Lamont stated in a release.

I am elated that the state has reconsidered their position. This is a serious health issue for us. And more time will allow us to prepare,” Myers said Monday.

Also on Monday, Lamont released this guidance for dental offices looking to return to non-emergency work this week.
