A dramatic scene unfolded on Whalley and downtown around 1 p.m. Monday.
It began in the drive-through lane of the Wendy’s at 75 Whalley. A gunman in the parking lot fired into a sports utility vehicle in the drive-thru lane, according to police spokesman Capt. Anthony Duff.
The gunman fled on foot toward Sperry Street. The driver of the SUV headed towards Broadway.
The SUV didn’t get far. It crashed and rolled over.
Police arrived and discovered the driver had a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The driver, who is 24, was taken by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital. He is in stable condition, according to Duff.
The parking lot at Wendy’s and the next-door dollar store remain blocked off as investigators comb the grounds for evidence. Surrounding streets, which had been temporarily closed, have reopened.
Duff asked anyone with information about the incident to contact police at 203 – 946-6304.
