New Haven’s “musician’s living room” is looking for a new owner.
The “living room” is Cafe Nine, the bar and cutting-edge live-music venue — and successor to the old Blubartz night spot — at the corner of State and Crown streets.
The current owner, Paul Mayer, confirmed Monday that he has listed the business for sale for months. now.
The word comes as another colorful, affordable, distinctively New Haven downtown establishment, the Anchor bar on College Street, closed its doors.
Business is good at Cafe Nine, said Mayer. He’s just had enough.
“I’ve owned it 11 years, and I am looking for someone to carry on its legacy. I’m 55 now and and want to move South. The winters are getting to me. I still enjoy it but it’s really a young man’s game,” Mayer said.
“My intent is to find someone who will keep the tradition of live music going. So hopefully it will be a seamless transition and you can continue to hear live music there.”
Mayer does not own the building. He said the building is not for sale, but if it ever comes up for sale, Cafe Nine has a right of first refusal to buy it.
