Micro-Battles Brew

One-time aldermanic candidate Frank Junny” Douglass (pictured) is one man on the ballot, as political micro-battles brew in nine New Haven neighborhoods.

The deadline passed last week for candidates to get on the ballot for Democratic ward co-chair seats. The results are in, and the tally shows nine competitive primary races across town. The competitions will take place in Wards 2, 8, 14, 18, 20, 21, 22, 26 and 28. The election is set for March 2; only Democrats can vote.

The ward co-chairs will become members of the Democratic Town Committee. After the election, they’ll decide whether to reelect DTC Chairwoman Susie Voigt. This year, with a frenzied political season sweeping across state, they’ll have a say in bigger-ticket items, too: In their role on the DTC, the co-chairs will elect delegates (most often, themselves) to send to the party’s state convention. At the convention, New Haven delegates will cast votes for party nominees for highly-profile races for U.S. Senate, state attorney general and governor. The nominations give extra weight to candidates going into a primary.

The co-chairs will have a say in local battles too: They will elect delegates (most often, themselves) to send to smaller conventions for state representative and State Senate seats.

Some highlights this year: Anti-illegal immigration activist Alan Felder is making a run in Westville’s Ward 26. Two block watch leaders are mounting a challenge to incumbents in Wooster Square’s Ward 8.

Douglass, who ran an unsuccessful, union-backed challenge to Ward 2 Alderwoman Gina Calder in 2007, is making another entry into local politics by joining a co-chair ticket with neighborhood activist Greg Smith.

In East Rock’s Ward 10, former co-chair Ray Saracco said he and fellow co-chair Kevin Donohue are stepping down to let former Alderman Dick Lyons and cycling activist David Streever take the reins. He said the decision was made in a meeting among interested candidates; they agreed to come to a consensus instead of having a political fight, he said.

See below for the full list of candidates provided by the city clerk. Runningmates are listed together, with contested races listed in bold.
