The crash aftermath.

Two dirt bike riders were sent to the hospital after colliding with a car at the intersection of Chapel and High streets downtown.

Sgt. Brendan Borer, the officer in charge at the scene of the crash Thursday, said the there were two riders on the bike.Their injuries looked pretty severe” before they were picked up by an ambulance, Borer said.

The collision took place around 6 p.m., he said. Police are still investigating the cause for the crash.

Police tape blocks the intersection of Chapel and High streets.

Darren, the driver of the vehicle hit by the dirt bike (he declined to give his last name), was still on the scene at 6:30 as police taped off the intersection.

He said he had been driving up High Street and had a clear green light, when a dirt bike slammed into the side of his car, shattering glass all over his face and deploying his car’s airbags.

I watched them sail over the car” and land on the pavement on the other side, he said.

The riders’ sneakers remained scattered throughout the scene along with shattered glass, plastic from the dirt bike fender, and sand from the airbag.
