Aldermen Monday approved acceptance of $3.2 million in federal funds to buy and rehabilitate homes in foreclosure.
The money comes from the federal government’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program: Click here for a back story.
The city plans to use the money to buy homes in these neighborhoods “in greatest need”: The Hill, Dwight, West River, Beaver Hill, Amity, Edgewood, Newhallville, Dixwell, Fair Haven, and the Annex. The list does not include the East Shore.
When the proposal came before aldermen at their monthly meeting Monday, East Shore Alderwoman Arlene DePino stood up to make an amendment. She asked that the city come back to the board for a public hearing before buying any homes. Her amendment, and the proposal, passed unanimously.
