Independent staff reporter Thomas MacMillan’s coverage of East Haven police harassment of Hispanics won him the 2010 National Award for Excellence in American Journalism on Latino issues.
The award, announced Friday by the AL DIA Foundation. Read a release about it here.
MacMillan won first place in the digital media division, edging out CNN. The award carries with it a $10,000 prize. MacMillan will also receive a medal at a ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington this fall.
Judges called MacMillan’s ongoing coverage of alleged racial profiling right across the New Haven-East Haven border “a fine example of traditional shoe leather reporting, consistent news coverage and the use of video, digital photos and court documents to provide context for the overall story. A strong marriage of multimedia and journalism.”
His stories appeared in the New Haven Independent in English and in La Voz Hispana in Spanish.
