The exploitation of immigrant nail-salon workers that came to national attention in New York is also taking place here, the state’s Department of Labor has found.
Surprise visits to 25 nail salons in the state by the department’s Wage and Workplace Standards Division resulted in 23 receiving stop-work orders and ordered to pay a total of $47,340 in owed wages, as well as $79,000 in civil penalties and $21,300 for wage and hour violations.
The unannounced visits took place on Aug. 3. The New Haven establishments found to be illegally underpaying workers included Magic Nail and Spa at 516 Foxon Blvd., Fashion Nail and Spa at 41 Elm St., and Nails Plus at 744 Chapel St.
“All of the salons have been allowed to open because they have all come into compliance,” reported department spokeswoman Nancy Steffens.
