Hundreds of New Haveners gathered Saturday for the third and largest annual bike ride between New Haven’s iconic cliffs.
Since it started in 2009 with 200 riders, Rock To Rock has become an annual rite and a major green fundraiser. This year, 500 riders raised more than $50,000 for 14 environmental groups, according to organizers.
The ride started out with breakfast at Common Ground High School, an environmental-themed charter school at the base of West Rock.
It passed through Beaver Pond and Edgewood Parks.
The Devil’s Gear Bike Shop staff served as a pit crew for riders.
The New Haven Land Trust Green Team showed up as “pot heads” with plants tied to their helmets. They won the team spirit award, and the top team fundraiser award for raising $6,444. Land Trust executive director Chris Randall won the highest individual fundraiser award for raising $2,608.
Some riders took the leisurely ride through the parks. Others opted for a faster, long ride. They all met up in East Rock Park at the end for food, freebies and massages.
