New Haven ended January with a fifth homicide.
That latest victim is Joseph Vincent Mattei.
The 28-year-old man was at Plymouth and Lamberton Streets in the Hill Monday around 8:30 p.m. when someone shot at the car he was inside. He was hit. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead on Friday, according to police spokesperson Capt. Anthony DUff.
Duff asked anyone with information on the shooting to call dectectives at 203 – 946-6304 or to call the anonymous tip line 1 – 866-888-TIPS (1 – 866-888‑8477).
Four other homicides took place in January. Police also found the body of a man Saturday in Edgewood Park’s duck pond; the victim has yet to be identified or a cause of death determined.
Fair Haven youth worker Frankie Redente knew Mattei since Mattei was a kid in Fair Haven
“Joey was always a good kid. He cared about his community and after graduating from SCSU worked along side me on a number of cases,” Redente wrote. “When he worked for New Haven Family Alliance he was a great resource as a mentor for some of my kids in the YouthStat program. He was always a fixture at YouthStat meetings especially at Cross and Hyde. I’m gonna miss him. Feel terrible for his family. What happened to him is very sad. These streets are more heartless than ever.”
