Stolen-Car Driver Kills Scooter Rider

A wild ride on State Street ended up with the killing of a person riding a scooter.

The incident took place near 2390 State St. Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.

Here’s what happened, according to Hamden police spokesperson Capt. Ronald Smith:

Drivers of two cars were speeding and driving erratically” southbound on State, passing other vehicles” and crossing the double yellow lines.”

One of the vehicles was a Toyota Corolla, which someone stole in Hamden on June 17.

The driver of the vehicle struck the scooter operator, who had been traveling northbound. The scooter operator was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Update: The victim was identified as Garrison Nieves, 21, of Hamden.

After the crash, the Corolla’s occupants hopped out and entered the other vehicle, a blue Honda. And they all sped off.

Police are looking for them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Nicholas Lovett at (475) 201‑1201,” Smith wrote in a release.
