The Board of Alders granted unanimous final approval to a new teachers union contract that trades a pay freeze this year for no layoffs or medical premium increases over the next three.
Local legislators took that vote Monday night during their latest bimonthly full board meeting.
The virtual meeting took place online via Zoom and YouTube Live.
The alders unanimously backed a new three-year collective bargaining agreement between the New Haven Board of Education and the New Haven Federation of Teachers, Local 933.
The labor pact extends from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023, and is essentially an extension of the existing agreement — no general wage increases, no medical premium increases, no layoffs.
The deal does include a step increase in its second year, including $2,000 added to the top step, as well as another step increase in the third year, with $1,000 added to the top step.
Overall, the agreement adds roughly $9.3 million to the union’s previous $129.7 million contract, representing a roughly 7.18 percent increase.

Finance Committee Chair and Edgewood Alder Evette Hamilton urged her colleagues to support the new contract during her brief remarks before the final vote.
“Overall, this agreement ensures a stable teacher workforce and it’s fiscally responsible,” she said.
Unanimous approval ...no surprise here..and without debate. Alder Hamilton says the agreement insured a stable workforce and is fically responsible. And that's without having teachers enter the classroom this year and maybe next.
Ok..please explain how s city running a year in projected deficit of plus $5M together with a health benefits line item that year after year ends in the red requiring a bonding reconciliation sounds any thing like fiscal responsibility...
However, when the spending of other taxpayers money is the deciding factor, is there any wonder how this crew could reach such an unopposed political finding.. without the slightest presentation of the FACs.
