Look out! As the winds picked up fast at 5 p.m., the big trees started toppling in Westville.

A huge tree fell around the same time at the corner of Harrison Street and Whalley Avenue, on the grounds of Westville’s Mitchell Branch library (pictured at the top of the story).
A big chunk of a neighboring tree came down with it. Police Officer Mike Koval blocked the intersection with crime scene tape, then hurried on his way to catch up with the hazardous conditions developing throughout the area.
At the corner of Whalley Avenue and Fitch Street, a large pine tree came down in Edgewood Park shortly before 5 p.m., knocking out power to the traffic light at the intersection.
Police had the northbound lane shut down on the Boulevard north of Columbus Avenue, where a large tree had toppled and was leaning on power lines.
Nearby, another downed tree — the city’s annual holiday tree — was trussed up and waiting for better weather, to be installed on the Green.
In City Point, at the corner of Howard Avenue and Sixth Street, a tree had toppled into the street. Police had Howard Avenue blocked off.
Downtown, a non-arboreal casualty was evident. Sandy had expressed her displeasure with Foot Locker.
