On Sunday October 6, 2024 at approximately 2:45 pm, God called Dorothy P. Mooring home. Dorothy was the first born to William Petaway and Maggie Petaway. Her formal education was in the New Haven Public Schools (if they had cooking classes in high school, I am sure she was in one of them!). She was a long-time member of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church on Chapel Street in New Haven, Conn. Dorothy enjoyed good gospel music and cowboy movies. She also enjoyed and did a great amount of walking; she would walk from her home to downtown New Haven. Also at times, she would walk on Dixwell Ave to the Hamden Plaza just like it was nothing!
Sometimes little Dwayne would be with her. When Melvin came along, he would take a walk along too. Dorothy was employed at Grace New Haven Hospital/YaIe-New Haven Hospital for 45 years; she was loved and adored at her job. There she worked in the cafeteria, tube Room, the phlebotomy room, and at different times, as Elevator Operator Dorothy.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Merlon T. Mooring; and her first-born son, Merlon G. Mooring. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories, daughters Apostle/Dr. Lucille Winston (James) and Diane Covington; sons, Alexander Mooring and Dwayne Mooring; grandchildren, Ronald W. Jones (Stacy), Dorothy Jones-Dillon, Alexander Gatison-Mooring, Leslie Mooring-Howard (Donald), Troy Mooring, Dwayne Mooring, Cameischa Benjamin, Erika Mooring, Melvin Mooring, Tonya Covington, and Stacey Covington; great-grandchildren, Taralle La Valle Morrison, Dante Mooring, Tinina Mooring, Andrew Jones, Malik Jones, and Malaysia Jones; great great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Covington, Jason Covington, Sydney Covington, Caprice Covington, Brice Covington, Sky Jones, (and 3 others for Andrew Jones), Mariles Mooring, Armez Mooring, Amara Mooring, Arayna Mooring, Camaurie Benjamin, Madison Benjamin, and Noah T. Jones; brothers, William Petaway of New Haven and Leroy Petaway of California; and a great multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Dorothy loved all of her family and was concerned about each one.
She was also predeceased by her sister, dear to her heart, Inez Petaway-Jaynes; loving granddaughter and namesake, Dorothy Monique Jones-Dillon; a longtime friend and sister whom she always referred to as Monique Harriett Douglass (Snooky); and another longtime friend and sister, Willie Mae Cue.
