Dr. James “Jimmy” Williams was born on Jan. 12, 1944, in Mullins, South Carolina, son of the late Masciene Thompson. On Dec. 14, 2024, at 10:45 a.m., the angels escorted Jimmy to his eternal home. His two loving sons, Ramsey Williams and Reginald Williams, were at his side to comfort and support him through this transition.
Dr. Williams was a scholar and athlete obtaining his early education in the New Haven Public School System. After graduation from Hillhouse High School he attended Norfolk State College for two years before enlisting in the United States Army serving from August 1966 to August 1969. During his enlistment he courageously engaged in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist (72B – Communications Center Specialist).
Following his military service, Dr. Williams continued his education and in 1972, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science. With a strong passion for learning, in 1974, he earned a Master of Science degree in Urban Studies and in 1977, he earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling. By 1980, he had earned a Sixth Year Professional Diploma in Counseling/Career Counseling. Dr. Williams achieved his greatest academic success in 1989, when he earned a Doctor of Education (PhD in Education).
Dr. Williams began his career as the Community Outreach Worker at Hillhouse High School. He commitment to a career in higher education began in 1972 as assistant director of admissions at Southern Connecticut State University. This was the start of his ascension and greater commitment to assist future generations in the achievement of their educational goals. This career path was birthed from a heart to lead and inspire by example. Dr. Williams was the assistant director of admissions from 1972 to 1988 and then promoted to associate director of admissions in 1988. He stayed in that position until 2006. In 2007, Dr. Williams was appointed the interim director of admissions until his retirement in 2009 knowing that during the span of his career he had assisted countless young people achieve their dreams and academic goals.
Dr. Williams was a doer in the community and had many meaningful affiliations during his life. He was proud and dedicated to the brotherhood of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the community service it consistently provided. His presidency of the Connecticut Talent Association, showcasing the most promising talent in this community. He displayed tireless support for fellow veterans through his work with the Charles W. Wood VFW. (Veterans of Foreign War) Post 10321, where he served as Commander for three years. Dr. Williams was former chair of the Civil Service Commission of the City of New Haven. Always enjoying a good challenge, he learned the game of golf and developed some strong friendships as a member of the Knickerbocker Golf Club in New Haven. He was a faithful member of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church in New Haven.
Dr. Williams is survived by his loving wife, Bertha Love Williams, who he married in 1971. From this beautiful union had two adoring sons, Ramsey Williams and Reginald Williams. He also leaves to cherish his memory, one brother, Lee Marvin Williams (Beth) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven, Conn., 06511. Q’s Tribute will commence at 10:30 AM.
