Ernest James Green was born on March 13, 1926, in Darlington, South Carolina. He was one of four children and received his education in Darlington.
In 1944, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country until 1947. During his time in the military, he joined St. Matthew Unified Free Will Baptist Church in 1945, which later became St. Matthew’s Unison Free Will Baptist Church. His unwavering faith and dedication led to 79 years of devoted service to the church.
On Dec. 10, 1955, Ernest married the late Annie Green, and together they welcomed 8 children into their lives.
An extremely hardworking man, Ernest spent over 30 years employed with the City of New Haven Sanitation Department. He took pride in his work and remained committed to providing for his family. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, landscaping, gardening, and staying active through exercise. He was also a passionate car enthusiast and was known for his sharp sense of style.
Ernest was predeceased by three of his children: Eric Green, John Gray, and Gordon Green.
He is survived by his children: Myles Green (Renee), Lisa Green, Ernest Green, Jr. (Marion), Brian Gray, and Linda Brown.
Ernest Green was a proud grandfather, blessed with 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, along with a host of extended family and friends.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 9:00 AM at Saint Matthews Unison Free Will Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Saturday at the church from 8:00 AM — 9:00 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven. Services by Howard K.
