Frances A. Younger

Frances A. Younger, affectionately known as Nanna,” was born in October 22, 1928 in Ekmon, West Virginia to the late John and Mary Moore.

Frances was one of nine children, six brothers and two sisters. She gained her wings and entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

Frances grew up in Kyle, West Virginia. She had to leave school in the 7th grade to help care for her mom and siblings. Life was not easy. Frances was a housewife and housekeeper. Upon moving to Connecticut in the early 1960’s, Frances worked for the Rubber Craft factory making life jackets for ships and vessels. Upon leaving that job, she opened a home daycare and took care of many little ones. After the home daycare business, she worked for Mead Street Convalescent facility where she cared for the elderly.

Frances became a member of St. Matthews Church in the early 1960’s and was a devoted member. She was part of the start-up group for the 8 a.m. service which Bishop Gay began in the Robert J. Gay building. The service eventually became too large for the building, and they had to move to the main sanctuary to accommodate attendees. Frances was a member of the intermediate choir, the Home Mission group and cooked for the Saturday feeding program. She shied away from being a mother of the church as she never wanted to be in the spotlight.

Frances spent her entire life taking care of others, doing for others, and being devoted to her church family. She always avoided any type of spotlight. She was always available to cook for any occasion including wakes, funerals, and church dinners. She would even cook breakfast or brunch for the pastor and her closest church friends. Many of these meals were prepared and consumed on Bassett St.

Frances will be remembered for her comedic timing and signature phrases like, love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck, love you the more, and same old soup warmed over.” She will also be remembered for her great cooking, especially banana pudding, German chocolate cake and homemade rolls.

Frances leaves to cherish her memory her three children, Cynthia Williams, Carolyn Fletcher, and Melvin Younger, Jr.; grandchildren, Dion Younger (Vicky), Shontel Sorrells (Manny), and Melvin, III; great-grandchildren, Latea (Donnell), Tameka, Dion M, Jackson, and Joi; great great-grandchildren, Terrance (TJ), Lohgen, Kani, and London; and a host of relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Melvin Younger; six brothers; two sisters; and grandchildren, Jerrell Fletcher and Terrence Chambers.

A celebration of her life will take place Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew’s UFW Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Thursday at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven. Services by Howard K.
