Gail Ann Fowler, 76

Gail Ann (Coleman) Fowler, 76, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Born on August 27, 1947, Gail was the second of seven children to the late Henry and Anna Coleman. She was a lifelong resident of New Haven, educated in the New Haven public schools, and a graduate of Wilber Cross High School Class of 1965.

Gail has also been a lifelong member of St Paul UAME Church where she served in various capacities over the years including the Steward Board, Church School Superintendent, Class Leader, and various other ministries. More than any position held, Gail’s life was dedicated to loving people. She was a daughter, sister, mother, niece, aunt, grandmother, godmother, and friend to many, offering advice and a listening ear.

In her early adult years, Gail dedicated herself to the cause of justice working as a member of the Black Panther Party and civil rights activist fighting for the rights of women and children. She also served on the Board of Alders for the City of New Haven in the early 1970s. In 1972 Gail left politics and activism behind to begin what would be a thirty-eight-year career at the United States Post Office. During the latter half of her career, Gail found great joy and a sense of purpose working with Yale University students at the Yale Station branch of the USPS.

Gail’s life was dedicated to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, her career, and her church. She leaves to mourn a daughter; Wynnett C. Stewart; a son Albert R. Lee Jr; two stepdaughters, Doreen Lee and Carla Collier; four grandchildren, Dacia Bucknor, Steven Fowler, Anthony Ross II, Sherisse(sp?) Ross; four sisters, Sharon Scott, Linda Coleman, Paula Dennie, and Sandra Jackson (Donald); one brother, Henry J. Coleman Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Leonard J. Fowler; her son, Bryant Coleman; her stepdaughter, Katherine Fowler, and her sister, Doreen Coleman.

While we mourn the loss of a woman who touched so many, we remember her indomitable spirit, her jovial laughter, and her faithful commitment to love God and God’s people.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like for donations to be made to St. Paul UAME Church Youth Department using Cashapp, Zelle, or Venmo StPaulUMEChurchNewHaven@gmail.com
