Maria Pabon was born on Sept. 6, 1953 and she passed away on Sunday, May 24.
Maria was like a light for so many.
Maria worked at a laundromat in New Haven called Bubble and Squeak for more than 20 years, and always supported the Mexican and Latino community.
Many people came through the laundromat during those more than 20 years and she made every single one of those people feel like family. She became Godmother Maria, Comadre Maria, the friend and mother figure to so many.
She provided resources, she took people to medical appointments, she accompanied people to court appointments and she even drove people to see family in jail.
What Maria was to so many is indescribable.
She had a love of music and danced like no other.
Her charisma, laughter and love for life made her unique. She was very involved in the Catholic Church and with many of the communities from Tlaxcala, Mexico.
She cooked for Bregamos and Unidad Latina en Accion. There was no better arroz con gandules and pernil than Maria’s.
Maria was born Puerto Rican but she became an important part of the Mexican community in New Haven.
She is survived by her sisters Diana Navarro and Tony Navarro, Dolores Nixon and Kenneth Nixon and Santos Calderon and Jenny Calderon.
Her children Esmeraldo Pellot, Ramon Pellot and Angel Pabon. And a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren and family. And hundreds of friends.
She was laid to rest Thursday May 8 at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cementary.
