It is with a profound sense of loss and affection that we announce the passing of Willie Joe Dunnigan, known affectionately to friends and family as Bud, on Monday, May 6, 2024. Born on May 24, 1941, in Decatur, Mississippi, Willie’s journey of 82 years took him from his Southern roots to his final days in New Haven, Connecticut, where he peacefully passed away due to natural causes.

Marshall Gambrell Sr., age 74, of New Haven, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Sharon (Spruill) Gambrell. Born in New Haven on July 11, 1949, he was the son of the late Christopher Gambrell and Fleta H. Gambrell Tolson and was a longtime resident of New Haven.

Mae Alice Horton (known as Bootsie), 81, of New Haven, CT passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024. She was born in Newark, NJ to the late Edward and Maybel Weems on July 10, 1942. She was educated in the Newark School System and graduated from Southside High School.

Hugh Bullock, Jr. (BO) passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024. Born on August 26, 1945, to the late Hugh and Ruby (McClain) Bullock in Apex, N.C. As a young man, he attended school in Apex. The values of neatness in appearance, pride, and a strong work ethic were instilled in him as a child.

Edie Fishman July 22, 1921 – February 21, 2024
Edyth Bartman Fishman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of immigrants from Odessa in Czarist Russia. Growing up in the years of the Great Depression shaped her worldview. Thousands were hungry and without work. While in high school both parents fell ill but had no health care. Edie and her sister Lillian took turns going to high school every other day so they could care for their parents.

William Kenneth Joyner, 82, of New Haven departed this life peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded in love. Ken was born on April 17, 1941, in New Haven, CT to William “Bud” Joyner and Brownie McCoy Joyner. Ken graduated from James Hillhouse High School in 1959 and attended Eli Whitney Technical Training School in Hamden, CT, later Central State University in Wilberforce, OH. He held many positions and enjoyed working at the New Haven Housing Authority.

James Apuzzo, Jr., of New Haven, passed away February 11, 2024, in Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in New Haven on September 29, 1967, the beloved son of James Apuzzo, Sr. and the late Anita Ciccolallo Apuzzo, Jim was an accountant for the City of New Haven for over 25 years. Jim was a lover of heavy metal, having attended over 1,000 concerts, including 99 Iron Maiden shows. He traveled extensively through Europe, following his passion and enjoying life. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Dallas Cowboys, Boston Bruins and NY Yankees. In addition to his father, Jim is survived by his brother, Primo Apuzzo and his wife Lucy, nieces, Lorraine Burdick and Ashley Apuzzo, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Although Jim lost his battle with cancer, he will forever rock the heavens.

Deborah Terrece Williams Fuller, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024. Deborah was born on September 19, 1956, in Bridgeport, CT to Andre and Rosezanne Williams. A proud graduate of Lee High School, Deborah later relocated to New Haven.

Martha C. Rhodes passed on Friday, January 26, 2024, the daughter of Martha Sanders Jackson and Boulyoun Jackson, born September of 1923 in Lamar, South Carolina. The family later moved to Darlington, South Carolina, where she attended and graduated from Mayo High School in 1941. Later that year, she moved to Milford, Connecticut where she met Robert Rhodes, Sr. whom she wed in 1942. In 1984, Robert and Martha retired to St. Petersburg, Florida. After six years, they then relocated to Darlington, South Carolina for another six years, until they returned to Connecticut in 1996. They were married for 55 years until Robert’s passing in 1998.

Robert Todd Ellis was born in New Haven, CT on October 15, 1964 to Glendora Ellis Gibson and the late Robert D. Ellis. He was educated in the New Haven school system and is a graduate of Wilbur Cross High School. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science & Management with a concentration in Civil Engineering from Tuskegee University. After working at the Yale University School of Medicine for several years as a Construction Manager and later a Project Manager in the Design and Facilities Management division, he realized that to make a larger impact he needed to learn more about the business side of engineering. Thus, he obtained a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut.
