Carol Denise Johnson was born to Phillip Johnson, Sr. and Ruth James in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on August 6, 1956. Carol received her formal education in Florence Public Schools, starting with North Vista Elementary. Following the deaths of both her parents, Carol began to assume the matriarch role of the Johnson family. At her Grandma Chizzie’s side, Carol helped take responsibility for her three beloved brothers and would be responsible for paying the bills, grocery shopping, maintaining the property, and overseeing her brothers’ education.
Tangey Rhea Portee, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. She was born in New Haven, CT to the late Herbert L. Portee and Patricia Ann McPherson Portee on September 3, 1973.
Frank Clayton, Jr. was born on July 21, 1960, to Overseer Dr. Willie Mae Clayton and the late Frank Clayton, Sr. He departed this life on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023. He was 63 years old.
Sylvia “Sibby” Addie Harper of North Haven passed away peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023. Sylvia was born in New Haven on Feb. 17, 1950. She was the only daughter of the late Gladys Mae Harper, née Brown and Lubbie Harper, Sr.
Sylvia attended public schools in New Haven and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1969. She then attended Strayer College in Washington D.C., where she earned a degree in Business Administration. Following graduation, Sibby returned to New Haven and joined Southern New England Telephone company (SNET), from where she retired after several decades of service.
Sibby was an affectionate, strong woman, stern, kind, and giving all rolled into one. You never needed to ask what was on her mind. She told you! She also cared for both her mother and stepfather, Robert Harris, during their later years, sacrificing her time to meet their daily needs.
Sibby is survived by her two older brothers, The Honorable Justice Lubbie Harper, Jr. and Lawrence Harper, who were at her side during her last difficult days; loving sisters-in-law Twila J. Harper, Judith A Harper, and Terry Harley; nieces, Lyjune A. Harper and Laura A. Harper; and nephews, Attorney Lubbie Harper, III, Retired Master Sergeant, Lawrence (Amy) Harper, Jr., and Officer Lane A. Harper.
She is also survived by her great niece, Dy Shynic Conner; and a host of great nephews, Ian G. (Kim) Pollard, Justin L. Harper, Jared J. (LaToya) Pollard, Cohen A. Harper, Corey A. Harper, Officer Dimitris A. (Officer Britney) Harper, Christopher A. Harper, Jeremy A. Harper, Jackson J. Pollard, Mason L. Pollard, and Kaiden I. Harper; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
Sibby loved her family immensely. She spent a lot of time with her brothers, attended innumerable family gatherings, and enjoyed time with her many cousins, nieces, and nephews, each of whom loved her greatly.
Sibby was an active lifetime member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, Elm City Chapter. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, a national organization. She loved to travel, and took trips to the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and visited family members throughout the South. She also enjoyed Broadway shows, the Casino, and making ceramics.
Sibby was a faithful and devoted member of St Matthews’ Unison Free Will Baptist Church in New Haven, where, under the pastoral ship of Bishop Robert Gay and now presiding Pastor Kevin C. Hardy, she served in many capacities alongside her church family.
We love you Sylvia (Sibby) Addie Harper and we will miss you dearly, but we rejoice and celebrate your life and the reunion you will have with your loved ones. We are privileged to have a lifetime of memories of our time spent with you.
A celebration of Sylvia’s life will take place Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 6:00 PM at St. Matthew’s UFW Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Wednesday at the church from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Interment will be Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 9:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven. Jacob Irvine made his transition to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023 in New Haven, CT. He was born on Aug. 8, 1938 on the beautiful picturesque island of Tobago. Jacob was a snowbird and would spend his summers in the USA and the winters back home in sweet TNT.
Percess Joyce Hendricks, “P,” “Mummy” was born on April 15, 1952, in Mitchell Town, Clarendon, Jamaica, WI. She was a lovely twin girl from proud parents, the late Clifford George and Mildred Elizabeth Medina Smith Hendricks. Percess lost her twin sister, Monica “Merle” 10 years ago.
Guy Adam Smith affectionately known as “Smitty”, was born in New Haven, CT, on April 2, 1965. He peacefully transitioned from life on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at his home, after a lengthy illness. Guy graduated from Coginchaug High School in Durham, CT in 1982. He furthered his education at Florida A & M University where he participated in track and ROTC.
Mamie Louise Carmon, 83, departed this life and transitioned peacefully into her eternal resting place on Saturday, September 2, 2023. Mamie was born in Pitt County, North Carolina on September 16, 1939 to the late Charlie and Classie Mobley, Sr.
Gloria Chavis-Perkins, 80, of New Haven, Connecticut, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2023. She was born in Fairmont, North Carolina on February 22, 1943 to the late James Henry and Clara Floyd Chavis. She was married to the late Harry Perkins, who passed away on August 18, 2023.

We are saddened to report that Herbert S. Newman, FAIA, founder and principal emeritus of Newman Architects, passed away on August 7th, 2023, at the age of 89. He leaves behind an indelible legacy of significant contributions to the built environment of the city of New Haven, the campus of Yale University, and cities and campuses across the country, as well as through generations of colleagues and collaborators influenced by his mentorship.
