Shirley A. Cox-Cheek, 82, went to her eternal resting place on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024. She was the daughter of the late John Frank Edwards and Vivian O. Cox, born March 1, 1942, in Greenville, South Carolina. She attended public school in New York City. Shirley worked as an outstanding Nurse Assistant at Whitney Manor for many years. She was later employed by Yale-New Haven Hospital as an exceptional Environmental Associate where she retired in 2009.
Shirley married Kenneth E. Cheek at an early age. Her favorite color was lavender, and she enjoyed shopping.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Vivian, Nazareth (Kenneth), and Sherry (Robert); sons, Cantrell (Carmen) and Che (Montaya); brother, Charlie R. Edwards; aunt, Shirley Williams; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members and friends.
Shirley was predeceased by daughter, Carolyn; son, Orrin; siblings Johnnie Cox, Willie Cox, M. Edith Jackson, Bonnie Edwards, Velma M. Jackson, Thelma L. Pugh, John Frank, Wiley, John F., and Willie Frank, granddaughters, Missie Cheek, Nazareth Cheek, and Preston Dright; and longtime companion, Anthony William Francis.
A celebration of her life will take place Friday, Nov. 1, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St, New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Friday at the funeral home between 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven.
